Discover the white city in the south of Peru-Arequipa
Welcome to our blog about South America. Our tour operator for South America viajando South America is located in the pretty city of Arequipa, in the south of Peru. The city is located at an altitude of over 2,300 meters above sea level and is approximately 70 kilometers from the coast. Arequipa is also known as “the white city”, as it is located between three volcanoes and has numerous Baroque buildings made of sillar, a white volcanic rock. If you’ve always dreamed of climbing volcanoes, then you’ve come to the right place. Walk up the volcano Misti, which is at an altitude of over 5’822 meters above sea level and is the most famous volcano in Arequipa due to its conical shape. You can also climb the highest volcano Chachani (6’057m) and the more distant Pichu Pichu (5’664m) volcano to the east.
Beautiful city center in Arequipa
Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru, as it has much to offer, including a beautiful city center with many attractions. The city center has therefore been included in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the center is the convent of Santa Catalina, where the nuns used to live completely isolated from the outside world. Today, the monastery with its pictures streets and courtyards is a “city in the city” and accessible to visitors. The monastery complex is one of the main attractions of Arequipa and is still inhabited by nuns and novices today. Without a doubt, Arequipa has the most beautiful Plaza de Armas of all Peru! Here you can relax and enjoy the sun while drinking a coffee. You can also visit other sites such as the Historic Center, the Cathedral, the U.S.A. Archeological Museum and the San Camillo Market on a city tour.
Culinary in Arequipa
In Arequipa, of course, the culinary is awesome! Go to a restaurant for lunch, in the so-called “Picanterias” and enjoy it. The Picanterias are an ancient regional tradition that perfectly combines rural life and gastronomy. For example, dishes from Arequipa are: Rocoto: This cult dish is a stuffed chili pepper with meat and is baked with cheese. You should also try Soltero de queso, a mixed salad with cream cheese or the famous soup Adobo. This soup is served for breakfast on Sundays and consists of pork ribs, onions, chicha de jora and hot peppers. Of course, there are many more delicious dishes to try.
Arequipa is also the perfect starting point for day excursions such as the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest gorges in the world. If you have more time, you can also visit the deepest gorge in the world in Cotahuasi and go hiking there and enjoy the nature, as it’s less touristic. Through a well-developed bus network Puno can be reached in just 6.5 hours, the starting point for a tour on the Lake Titicaca. There are also numerous buses going in the other direction, including Cusco, where one of the seven wonders of the world is located, namely the ruined city of Machu Picchu.
